The Retro Runner as Memoir: Earls Collection’s Take on the ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 16

Australian collaborations have become a strong lane for ASICS in recent years, and Earls Collection continues to stand out as one of the brand’s most thoughtful creative partners. Following their breakout GT-2160 from 2024, the duo return with a GEL-CUMULUS 16 rooted in Earls Collection founder Lewi Brown’s upbringing in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The collection reflects Brown’s connection to both family and sport, translated through a palette and material selection loaded with personal references. The GEL-CUMULUS 16 arrives with crisp white mesh panelling contrasted by metallic silver overlays, tapping into the retro-runner aesthetic synonymous with ASICS’ early-2010s catalogue. Pebbled textures across the Tiger Stripes add depth to the upper while serving as a tribute to Brown’s mother, with earthy brown overlays symbolising family heritage and grounding influences throughout the design.

Underfoot, custom insoles recreating the carpet from Brown’s childhood home introduce one of the pair’s most personal touches, transforming an everyday memory into wearable design language. Beyond its layered material execution and nostalgic running references, the shoe also carries a deeper connection to Brown’s Māori roots and the individuals continuing to push the culture forward.

With the GEL-CUMULUS 16, Earls Collection and ASICS move beyond aesthetics alone, using the silhouette to reflect Brown’s upbringing and personal history. The layered textures and nostalgic running cues bring depth to the design without overpowering its story. It’s a release that feels equally grounded in heritage and sport.
